We’ve been following the tragic case involving a fatal Las Vegas pedestrian accident that occurred in December that left one man dead and another seriously injured. The driver was arrested after the accident and appeared in court in March to plead guilty to one count of reckless driving in connection with the collision. He appeared in court again yesterday for sentencing, and the judge handed down a sentence of 2-5 years in prison.
The horrific Las Vegas pedestrian accident occurred on December 9 of 2009. Two men, Willard Hilborn and Dennis Christopher Dietrich were crossing the street in front of Blair House Suites in the 300 block of Desert Inn Road when the defendant’s vehicle sped along and wiped them both out in a gruesome manner. Hilborn survived the crash, but suffers from injuries to his knee and hip that he believes will never heal. Dietrich was killed at the scene.
The defendant, Mahmod Alseidahmad, a native of Jordan, could have faced up to six years in prison, but was given a slightly shorter sentence. In addition to his immediate future that includes incarceration, he could face deportation back to Jordan after he completes his sentence. The case was particularly troubling because several witnesses stated that they saw the defendant traveling at very high speeds and weaving in and out of traffic in the moments that preceded this fatal Las Vegas pedestrian accident.
First, we’d like to offer our condolences to Dietrich’s family and to Hilborn in hopes that he recovers from his injuries as much as possible. We also hope that Dietrich’s family is able to find some sort of closure to this tragic loss now that the defendant has received justice at the hands of the Las Vegas criminal courts.
Las Vegas Wrongful Death and Personal Injury Lawsuits
In addition to criminal justice, the family of the person killed and the person who was injured could file Las Vegas personal injury lawsuits to obtain justice in civil courts. In such a wrongful death action, the family of the man who was killed could pursue damages on several fronts, as could Mr. Hilborn in a Las Vegas personal injury lawsuit for the apparently permanent injuries he has suffered.
