Motorcycles are a mode of transportation that their owners swear by for many reasons, including the enjoyment most get from driving them and the fact that the climate in Las Vegas is all but perfect for these types of vehicles. They are also generally an economic choice for several reasons. Unfortunately, two recent serious motorcycle accidents have also served as unfortunate reminders to many that motorcycles are dangerous, especially when sharing the road with larger vehicles.
On November 2, the Las Vegas Sun reported:
“A motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a car in the eastern Las Vegas Valley about 6:30 p.m. Monday night.
Metro Police are still investigating the crash at Nellis Boulevard and Stewart Avenue.
Police said the 27-year-old motorcyclist was northbound on Nellis when an ambulance entered the intersection on Stewart with lights and sirens on. Witnesses and evidence at the scene indicated the motorcyclist, rather than yielding, sped up and struck the side of a Toyota Camry making a left turn.”
Two days later, the Las Vegas Review Journal published the following story:
“A 22-year-old Las Vegas motorcyclist died Tuesday night when he and another motorcycle rider who were traveling at a high rate of speed struck a 2004 Mercedes Benz C230K turning in front of them on Sahara Avenue at Edmond Street, according to Las Vegas police.
The man was traveling west on Sahara about 8 p.m. on a 2006 Kawasaki ZX10R motorcycle along with a 20-year-old man riding a 2007 Suzuki GSXR1000. Witnesses said the pair were doing wheelies.”
These are just two of several severe motorcycle accidents in the area this year.
